Alt Text Generator AI writes SEO-friendly alt text for your images with AI. The Contao extension adds a module next to the file manager that shows your images with a preview, finds the ones with no alt text and writes it for one image, a selection or all of them. It can also write the text as soon as an image is uploaded. You review the text, change anything you like and save it into the file's metadata, where Contao reads it as the alt text of the image. This step-by-step guide shows how to install and use it.

Install the Extension
- Install it with the command shown here, or search for Alt Text Generator AI in the Contao Manager. You can also find it in the Contao Extension Repository
- Update the database and clear the cache when the Manager asks you to
- Sign in to the Contao back end. Alt Text Generator AI now sits in the Content group, next to Files

- Get your API key from the dashboard
- Open System > Settings and find Alt Text Generator AI. Paste the key into API key and save. You can also paste it into the module page the first time you open it
- Pick the language of the alt text, and tick Write alt text on upload if you want new images described automatically
- Your credits show at the top of the module page
💡Only administrators can change the key. The saved key is never shown again, so leave the field empty to keep it.
Find Your Images
- Open Alt Text Generator AI. It lists the images of your file manager with a preview and shows your credits
- Missing lists the images that have no alt text. All shows everything
- Pick the language of the alt text from the list, from English to Zulu. The text is saved for the website language that matches it
- Click Scan images to find files you added outside the file manager, for example over FTP
Generate Alt Text
- Tick the images you want, tick Select all to pick every image in the list, or leave them all unticked
- Click Generate selected or Generate all missing. Each image uses 1 credit. You can also click Generate on a single image
- Read the results and edit any text you want to change
- Click Save changes to save them all at once
💡Generate all missing skips images that already have alt text. Tick an image to generate it anyway, or tick Overwrite.
Use It in Your Templates
- The text is saved in the Alternate text field of the file's metadata, for the matching website language. Contao uses it as the alt of the image wherever you show it
- Open any file in the file manager and click Generate alt text beside its Alternate text to write one description on the spot
- With Write alt text on upload on, new images get their text as soon as they are uploaded
💡An alt text you typed in a content element still wins over the one from the file's metadata.
Bulk Module
A module in the Content group shows the images of your file manager with a preview and lists the ones missing alt text. Tick the ones you want and save them all at once.
Saved in the File's Metadata
The text goes into the Alternate text of the file, for each website language, so Contao uses it wherever the image is shown.
