Alt Text Generator AI now works inside your AI assistant. The MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, VS Code and other assistants that support the Model Context Protocol write SEO-friendly, accessible alt text for your images, and find the images on any web page that are missing it.

Things you can ask:

  • “Write alt text for https://example.com/photo.jpg in Spanish.”
  • “Write alt text for the image at ~/Desktop/product.png.”
  • “Scan https://mystore.com/products/shoes and list the images that have no alt text.”
  • “Scan that page and write alt text for the first 10 images that are missing it.”
  • “How many alt text credits do I have left?”
1

Get Your API Key

  1. Create an account on AltTextGeneratorAI.com
  2. Copy your API key from the dashboard. New accounts get free credits
  3. You also need Node.js 18 or newer on your computer
2

Add It to Your Assistant

Replace your_api_key with your key. Nothing needs to be installed by hand: the server starts on demand with npx.

Claude Desktop

Open Settings > Developer > Edit Config and add:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "alttextgeneratorai": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "alttextgeneratorai-mcp"],
      "env": { "ALTTEXTGENERATORAI_API_KEY": "your_api_key" }
    }
  }
}

Claude Code

Run this in your terminal:

claude mcp add alttextgeneratorai --env ALTTEXTGENERATORAI_API_KEY=your_api_key -- npx -y alttextgeneratorai-mcp

Cursor

Add the same settings as Claude Desktop to ~/.cursor/mcp.json.

VS Code

Add to .vscode/mcp.json:

{
  "servers": {
    "alttextgeneratorai": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "alttextgeneratorai-mcp"],
      "env": { "ALTTEXTGENERATORAI_API_KEY": "your_api_key" }
    }
  }
}

Any other assistant that supports MCP servers works the same way: run npx -y alttextgeneratorai-mcp with the ALTTEXTGENERATORAI_API_KEY setting.

Ask for Alt Text

  1. Restart your assistant so it loads the new tools
  2. Ask it to check your credits, to make sure the key works
  3. Ask it to write alt text for an image, or to scan a page of your site for images without alt text
  4. Add the suggested text to your site, or ask your assistant to do it in your code

Built to Be Safe

Open source, no known vulnerabilities, public pages only, real image files only, and your key stays in an environment variable.

Safety and Privacy

  • Public pages only: the page scan refuses local and private network addresses, including after redirects.
  • Real images only: file reading checks the file's contents, and by default only reads your home and temp folders.
  • Your key stays private: it is read from an environment variable and sent only to alttextgeneratorai.com over https.
  • What is sent to Alt Text Generator AI: your API key, the language, and the image address or image file. See the privacy policy.
  • Open source: read the code on GitHub or get the package on npm.

MCP Server FAQs

What is the Alt Text Generator AI MCP server?

It is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that lets AI assistants such as Claude, Cursor and VS Code write SEO-friendly, accessible alt text for images, and find the images that are missing alt text on any web page.

How do I install it?

Add it to your AI assistant's MCP settings with the command npx -y alttextgeneratorai-mcp and your API key in the ALTTEXTGENERATORAI_API_KEY setting. You need Node.js 18 or newer. The page shows the exact settings for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code.

Is the page scan free?

Yes. The audit_page tool lists the images with missing or empty alt text on a web page for free. It only uses credits if you ask it to also write alt text for the images it finds.

How many credits does it use?

Each image uses 1 credit, the same as in every other Alt Text Generator AI integration. The credits are a one-time purchase, never expire, and are shared across all integrations. New accounts get free credits.

Which languages does it support?

More than 130 languages. Ask for the language by name, for example Spanish, French, German or Japanese. The default is English.

Can it write alt text for an image file on my computer?

Yes. The generate_alt_text_from_file tool reads a JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP file up to 3 MB. By default it only reads files inside your home folder and the temp folder, and you can choose other folders with the ALTTEXTGENERATORAI_ALLOWED_DIR setting.

Is it safe to use?

The server is open source and has no known vulnerabilities in its dependencies. It only scans public web pages, refuses local and private network addresses, only reads real image files, reads your API key from an environment variable and sends it only to alttextgeneratorai.com over https.

Does it change my website?

No. It only reads pages and suggests alt text. You, or your assistant working in your code, add the text to your site.

🔑

Activate the MCP Server

Copy your API key from your dashboard and put it in your assistant's MCP settings, as shown above.
